Mexican Grill restaurant in St. George Durango robbed, suspect tackled by 17-year-old employee

ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) – On Friday, June 3 at approximately 9:45 p.m., officers from the St. George Police Department responded to a call at Durango’s Mexican Grill located at 245 Red Cliffs Rd.

According to a news release, the call said a man entered the restaurant, made reference to a weapon, threatened to harm employees and demanded money.

The statement said employees complied with the man, but as the suspect was leaving the restaurant, a 17-year-old male employee tackled him and other employees joined in to help pin down the man. .

The duty manager, who holds a concealed carry permit, reportedly came after hearing the commotion and helped keep the suspect at the scene until police arrived.

Officers arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody.

Police say the suspect arrived in St. George in a car believed to have been stolen from Las Vegas. He had very recently been released from Nevada custody on robbery and kidnapping charges.

Authorities say no one was injured in the incident and the stolen money has been returned.
